Das Verständnis über Autismus befindet sich derzeit im Wandel. So findet die Auffassung immer mehr Zuspruch, Autismus nicht mehr zu pathologisie-ren, sondern als menschliches Sein zu betrachten. Hierzu wird auf von Natur aus an-ders ausgerichtete Wahrnehmungssysteme und auf die damit verknüpfte Neurodiversi-tätshypothese verwiesen. Ob Autismus eine Behinderung ist, wird allerdings im Lager der Selbstvertretung autistischer Menschen kontrovers diskutiert. Ebenso stehen sich bei der Frage des Umgangs mit Autismus zwei zentrale Positionen kontrapunktisch gegenüber. Zum einen werden zur Vermeidung oder "Genesung" von Autismus Be-handlungsansätze postuliert, zum anderen wünschen sich Betroffene bessere Unterstüt-zung für ein Leben mit Autismus. Letztlich ist es eine ethische Frage der Einstellung und Haltung, ob Betroffene in ihrem So-Sein respektiert und mit ihren Unterstüt-zungsvorstellungen ernstgenommen werden oder ob sich die Praxis einer größtmögli-chen "Normalisierung" autistischer Menschen verschreibt.
The way autism spectrum conditions are thought of is currently changing. Thus, the notion that autism is not a disorder or a disease but rather a unique way of being is gaining more and more popularity. This includes embracing the fact that there are, naturally, different ways of perceiving the world and also turning to what is called the neurodiversity hypothesis. However, autism rights self-advocates still discuss whe-ther autism should be considered as disability or not. Furthermore, the question of how autism spectrum conditions should be dealt with as such has not been clearly an-swered yet but brings up two contrapuntal points of view. On the one hand there are approaches to prevent, treat or cure autism, on the other hand there are autistic people who demand that their needs and wants are met. In the end, it is a question of ethical standards whether people who live on the spectrum are accepted and treated respect-fully with regard to their way of being and their demands for support or whether the practice of trying to "normalize" autistic people as much as possible prevails.
