Beschreibung / Abstract

The individual support of each student as statutory task as well as the implementation of state-wide exit exams are regarded as important tools for improving the quality of schooling. Based on the obvious conflict between individualization and standardization, this paper presents the findings of a teacher-survey (N=501) concerning the implementation of student centered-instruction under the terms of state-wide exit exams at the end of secondary education. The results reveal that the majority of the teachers rarely practices student centered-instruction. Obviously, a positive attitude towards the compatibility of both tools does not influence eve-ryday teaching practice. Instead of state-wide exit exams further parameters plainly prevent teachers from practicing individualized teaching and learning.
