Beschreibung / Abstract

This paper aims to suggest what perspectives contemporary pedagogy should take in the face of the discourses of human enhancement emerging due to advancements in bio and genetic engineering. For this purpose, we will examine the ethics of giftedness by Michael J. Sandel, who openly expressed his opinion against enhancement, and attempt to draw out the implications of his work as they apply to our modern society and education. His proposal – relying on virtues such as humility, responsibility, and solidarity – is prone to logical refutation and does not provide a conclusive answer for the bioethical controversy. Nevertheless, its biggest value lies in the fact that it helps uncover the nature of the debate itself and the challenges contemporary pedagogy is forced to face concerning enhancement. At the same time, his idea is also significant with regard to the position contemporary pedagogy should assume at the intersection of the discourses of human enhancement and the discourses of traditional virtue-centred education. Thus, though contemporary pedagogy should maintain an open position with regard to the new gadgets emerging from science and technology on the one hand, it should always refrain from falling into the traps of functionalist understandings of humans and instrumentalist views of education, which lead to an uncontrollable craving for perfection, on the other hand.
