Thema dieses Essays ist die Verschränkung der epistemischen und der normativen Dimension von politischer Toleranz, wie sie in gängigen liberalen Toleranzbegründungen behauptet wird. Das Postulat, dass Toleranz als pädagogisch förderungswürdige Tugend untrennbar verknüpft ist mit politischer Urteilskraft und Wissen über die politische Welt, wird mit einer Reihe von Einwänden konfrontiert (u.a. Perfektionismus-, Elitismus- und Essentialismusvorwurf). Diese Einwände lassen sich, so die These, ausräumen oder zumindest relativieren, wenn man die normativ-epistemischen Grundlagen von Toleranzerziehung realistischer fasst, als sie von den Kritikern vorgestellt und konzipiert werden.

This essay deals with the entanglement of the epistemic and normative dimension of political tolerance that is asserted in current liberal tolerance justifications. The postulate that tolerance as a pedagogically eligible virtue is inseparably connected to the political power of judgment and knowledge about the political world is challenged by a number of objections (e. g. of perfectionism, elitism, and essentialism). Those objections can be dissolved - or at least relativized - by conceptualising the normative-epistemic foundations of education for tolerance in a more realistic way than critics often do.
