Descripción / Abstract

The protection of research participants against abuse, exploitation and harm is at the core of research ethics. This applies to all empirically oriented scientific disciplines, and in particular to health sciences. Starting from the assumption that the human being is vulnerable in itself, vulnerability is reinforced in the event of illness, physical or psychological disposition, and in old age. For researchers it is, therefore, necessary to recognize potentially increased vulnerability and act in a way that does not further increase vulnerability through participation in the research project. The prerequisites for this recognition are an understanding of the phenomenon of vulnerability and an operationalization of the conceptual basis for the research practice. Both prerequisites have been the subject of research in ethics for more than three decades. The focus of the conceptualization of vulnerability is on objective factors. What is largely left out are the dynamics and the subjectivity of the phenomenon of vulnerability. This creates new ethical problems when trying to protect vulnerable groups., The aim of the paper is to operationalize vulnerability for research purposes on the basis of the conceptual and phenomenal fundamentals, to identify possible risks in the application of the concepts and to sketch out approaches for solutions.
