Mit dem staatlichen Kinderschutzauftrag, den Kinder- und Jugendhilfeeinrichtungen und ihre Mitarbeiterinnen zu erfüllen haben, gehen verstärkt Beobachtungen der elterlichen Sorge- und Erziehungstätigkeiten einher. In dem Zusammenhang untersucht der Beitrag die Beobachtung von Kindern zur Überwachung ihres Wohls in stationären Mutter-Kind-Einrichtungen der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe. In diesen Einrichtungen werden junge Mütter mit Kindern sozialpädagogisch betreut, um deren Erziehungsfähigkeit zu stärken und damit das Wohlergehen des Kindes zu sichern. Unter Bezug auf ein relationales Konzept von Raum wird rekonstruiert, wie im Rahmen der Kontroll- und Kinderschutzfunktionen der Einrichtungen Räume der Beobachtung von Kindern organisiert werden. Anhand ethnographisch erhobener Daten wird herausgearbeitet, auf welche Weisen in den Einrichtungen die Sichtbarkeit der Adressatinnen und ihrer Kinder sowie die Beobachtbarkeit möglicher Kindeswohlgefährdungen hergestellt werden. Darüber hinaus zeigt die Analyse von Interviews mit Betreuerinnen, wie bei der Beobachtung von Kindern ein weiter reichender Beobachtungsgegenstand erzeugt wird, der auf die Erziehungsfähigkeit der Mütter verweist und somit Differenzierungen von (noch) normaler und gefährdender Mutterschaft anlegt.

The rules and regulations of the governmental child protection act place the parental care and educational activities of children´s and youth welfare institutions and their staff under increased supervision. In this context, the paper examines the monitoring of the child´s well-being in mother and child residential services in the child and youth welfare system. These institutions give young mothers and their children socio- pedagogical support in order to strengthen their parental competencies to secure the welfare of the child. Following a relational concept of space, the paper examines how spaces of observation are organized with regard to the control and child protection functions of the facilities. On the basis of ethnographical data, it is analysed how the women and their children can be made visible and potential child endangerment can be made observable. In addition, the analysis of interview material with social workers shows how a more comprehensive object of observation is generated, this is related to the educational capacity of mothers and thus aims to differentiate between (still) normal and endangering motherhood.
