Abstract: Until 1834, when the Prussian state introduced the Abitur examinations, which were from then on obligatory, German universities required no official bureaucratic permit from students who were willing to study. This lured historians of education to believe that no examinations of equal consequence and importance had existed in schools up to this point. Yet, historical sources from Gymnasiums and Latin schools in the 16th and 17th century suggest that, on the contrary, a set of very elaborate symbolical practices functioned to regulate students´ transition from class to class and from school to university. The contribution argues that the practice of examination initially developed as an instrument for the sovereigns´ recruitment of able subjects later emerged as a tool to adjust the proportions between inclusion and exclusion.
