The article offers an insight into the development and effects of Ilse Arlt´s and her student´s teaching-, research- and display collections, which started to develop during the pioneering phase of professional social work education and continued into the 1950´s. The content or subject area of this work was to collect and investigate diverse aspects of ways of human wellbeing and their deviations, in other words mani festations of poverty. These components Arlt categorized in terms of 13 necessities of human wellbeing or central human needs. Their adequate satisfaction is the aim and the content of everybody´s challenge to design a consumption-behavior, which facilitates individual and social wellbeing on the one hand and of professional social work on the other. The contents of the "Collections of Ilse Arlt": the manifold aspects of poverty and wellbeing or the ways of needs satisfaction (patterns of consuming) of different times and cultures, ought to offer the empirical basics of a science of welfare and care and its theory and history, which as Arlt criticized, were missing at that time. Part of this work and vision was the plan to establish a permanent museum of social issues, in other words a museum of welfare and care.
