Doch was bedeutet "Ressentiment"?

Friedrich Nietzsche played an important role in the process that made the term "ressentiment" well-known in Germany. He first used it in his polemic "On the Genealogy of Morals" (1887). Today the term "ressentiment" is frequently applied in German-speaking prejudice research and especially in German-speaking research on anti-Semitism. But what does "ressentiment" actually mean? Is it identical with "Vorurteil" (prejudice)? There is an observable conceptual confusion between the two terms. It is my aim, in this article, to juxtapose the Nietzschean notion of "ressentiment" with the contemporary social psychological concept of "Vorurteil" and to point out their relatedness as well as their diverging meanings. By doing so, I wish to expound the problems of commonly using of both terms as synonyms in both fields of prejudice and anti-Semitism research, and to demonstrate the significance of differentiating between them.
