Causal-Analytical Requirements for the Construction of Theories
Abstract: In the Social Sciences the empirical detection of causal effects bears considerable practical problems. Amongst others these are related to the fact that aspects of testability are not (sufficiently) accounted for in the construction of theories. Because of this, in this paper we propose causal-analytical requirements for social science theories. Besides the presentation of commonly accepted criteria of quality (e.g., parsimony, resemblance to reality, forecast success) and recent considerations on mechanism-based explanations we deal with the instrument of directed acyclic graphs. After a general presentation of this framework we use the explanation of the relationship between physical attractiveness and students´ evaluations of teaching to illustrate the advantages and drawbacks of a graph-based theory presentation. Although directed acyclic graphs do not automatically solve all problems we pledge for their use in the construction of theories due to gains in transparency and precision and a better cogging between theory and empirical results.
