The online behaviour of youths is of high scientific interest. Besides a descriptive perspective on the online behaviour of young people, often differences in online behaviour patterns are drawn between young men and women as well as between persons of different socioeconomic and cultural background. Up to now differences of online patterns between young people of rural and urban areas have seldom been depicted. According to the recent Shell Jugendstudie and studies from Scandinavia and the USA young people in rural areas as digital networkers stick to the internet as a forum of social contacts and information as well as a platform for shopping to compensate long distances to friends, shops and urban centres.
These hypotheses could be verified with a study contrasting the answers of young people of the Landjugendstudie 2010 with the JIM-Studie 2011, the BITKOM-Studie 2011 and the ARD/ZDF-Onlinestudie 2011.
Keywords: youth, youth in rural areas, internet, online behaviour, social communities
