Was als "Theorie" gelten kann, ist in der soziologischen Fachdisziplin umstritten und unklar. Die Arbeit plädiert für eine erklärende Soziologie auf handlungstheoretischer Grundlage und im Rahmen eines Methodologischen Revisionismus.

Sociology as a scientific discipline has no clear and uncontested understanding of the concept of "theory". The article argues in favour of an explanatory research programme which accepts an action-theoretical foundation combined with "methodological revisionism".
