  Description: The research programme related to Weltbeziehung aiming inter alia to understand the role of material, ideal, social, and cultural conditions for successful coexistence in plural societies, the creation of common languages for the narrative development of cultural heritage, und the understanding of essential value complexes and concepts in modernity, is the starting point for this volume. The German concept Weltbeziehung is used to point to the connectedness of self and world and the concept of self resulting from such relationships. “Resonance” can be used as a specific analytical concept which describes a particular form of relationship between subject and the “world”. This concept permits new insights in different disciplines and can be made fruitful in different areas of application, we present in this volume.

  Description: Private property is one of the most basic institutions in modern society. It produces a very specific form of relating to things, to other human beings and towards the self, and by doing this, it defines Weltbeziehung in the objective, the subjective, and the social dimensions simultaneously. This property-induced form of possessive Weltbeziehung, however, proves to be highly problematic under contemporary ecological, technological, and political conditions. Structural change of property might induce new habits of participatory property like sharing practices.

  Description: Virtues are necessary to successful Weltbeziehungen since they bring the virtuous person into a stable relation with the good and the right. The chapter explains why this is so. First, the concepts of world, relation, and virtue are analysed. Second, it is shown in general terms how and by what means virtues contribute to good self- and world relations (Weltbeziehungen). Third, the general claim is illustrated by reference to three individual virtues: Prudence combines true thinking with good action; it enables us to find the right answer to the question of how to realise the good here and now through our own actions. Charity ensures that we want and do what is good for the other person; it works interpersonally as well as between God and humans. Serenity is the basic attitude of proper self-distance and trustful surrender to God.

  Description: This chapter illustrates how treating Weltbeziehungen as objects of social research helps go beyond some assumptions that current theories of society take for granted. A case in point is the widely shared notion that modern social practices are sustained by the idea of an open future: This notion ignores the importance of fatalistic ways of relating to the world, and the role of practices whose participants project a future about which they have little to choose. As this chapter tries to show, fatalistic ways of relating to the world are closely tied to activities which are crucial for the dynamics of “modern” society; several puzzling forms of political activity—including some improbable types of collective action—become easier to explain if one recognizes that they are shaped by such fatalistic ways of relating to world. Therefore, taking such attitudes into account offers new explanatory possibilities—including alternatives to current normativist strategies of explanation.

  Description: World relations (Weltbeziehungen) are always also political relations, and they have recently seen a new increase in contestation, polarisation, and negativity. Against this background, this chapter reconstructs an idea of progress suitable for decision-making in contexts of human diversity. While classic notions of progress are either politically tainted or conceived as old-fashioned, worn-out Eurocentric ideas, a pluralist notion of progress is, rather paradoxically, both necessary and seemingly impossible. This contribution starts by problematising what happens in the absence of a notion of progress: the mushrooming of alternative, inferior concepts such as development, or increasing national greatness. It then reconstructs an idea of pluralist and impartial progress as a tool for allowing political decisions under conditions of diversity. Decisions, in turn, are a crucial “diabolical” tool in policymaking that requires special analytical considerations: a temporal dimension, a normative dimension, and a symbolic dimension. This discussion opens up the process of decision sciences and pleads for a notion of progress as slower and harder to achieve but avoiding the typical pitfalls of standard tools in accelerated decision-making. In doing so, this contribution adds to our understanding of how to address global challenges in their own time.

  Description: Research questions, concepts and theories developed in the social sciences to analyze and understand the social conditions of the contemporary world still reveal a Eurocentric bias. Non-western ways of thinking and knowing are mostly (de-)valued as “local” or “historical” forms of knowledge, emphasizing their only partial and limited relevance. This article engages in decolonialization as normative and intellectual project and pleads for decentering and pluralizing discourses and conceptualizations cross-culturally. The authors argue that interpreting the world, also in its special(ist) form of socio-philosophical (sociological) theoretization, must become a polyphonic encounter based on the co-presence and equal recognition of non-western (intellectual, knowledge) traditions and forms of argumentation. By taking up examples from research on the topics of ‘individualization’ and ‘translation’ they illustrate how scholars at the Max-Weber-Kolleg attempt to overcome Eurocentric perspectives. However, the authors also problematize the appropriation of decolonial rhetoric by right-wing groups (here: in India) in their pursuit of identity politics.

  Description: This chapter explores the shift in China's economic policy under Xi Jinping's leadership, which surprised Western observers with its increased government intervention and subsequent economic costs. We argue that these policies do not indicate fundamental changes in Chinese views of the government-economy relationship. Instead, they align with long-standing traditions of the Chinese Communist Party which tie up with economic thinking over two millennia, epitomized in early documents such as the Guanzi and the Yantielun. The chapter delves into the CCP's understanding of the market, highlighting the differences with Western conceptualizations maintained by international institutions. Chinese views on the market are deeply rooted in the notion of good governance, thus approaching the market as a device of the art of governing the commonwealth and emphasizing its moral dimensions. We emphasize the continuity of historical roles of the market, resulting in the persistent weakness of economic liberalism in China, resurfacing in recent trends of leading economic research in China. Hence, we question the compatibility between Chinese mainstream views and Western intellectual traditions, particularly regarding the assumption of market autonomy. However, the Western tradition also reveals a diversity of thought beyond mainstream economics that opens the vista for reconciliation, foremostly in the tradition of Hegel.

  Description: The chapter deals with different interpretations of Walter Benjamin’s Marxism from the early 1970s in two countries of the Soviet Bloc, East Germany and Hungary. Similar to the debates in the GDR of the early 1970s, also Sándor Radnóti’s road to Walter Benjamin was situated within the context of the polemic between the Frankfurt School and the review alternative regarding the appropriation of Benjamin’s work. In contrast to the German scene, Radnóti sought a third way by presenting Benjamin as a theoretical support of the political orientation towards democratic socialism. In comparison with the reception in the GDR, the contribution reconstructs the intellectual constellation that made Radnóti’s decision possible as well as the subsequent “Frankfurtization” of Benjamin’s interpretation, which absorbed the later approaches of the Budapest School to Benjamin as well. Radnóti’s advocation of collective culture as a vehicle of pluralist and resonant structures poses a challenge to the comparative theory of East European totalitarianism and its reverberations in current Critical Theory in the form of forced resonance.

  Description: The author develops an analysis of cities of the ancient Mediterranean world. The chapter analyzes how religious practices shape Weltbeziehungen in urban contexts. The focus is on a relationship fundamental for all inhabitants, namely to the dead, and dead ancestors in particular. With a framework of relational analysis, the chapter demonstrates that religion offers a toolbox for establishing a complex web of relations, to spaces, to people, to a beyond that is conceptually combining distance and contiguity. Burial practices and funerary rites show the working of such relations within the framework of an urbanity that amply employs the continuous membership of dead family for claiming social positions and at the same time conceptually excludes them from urban space proper.

  Description: The article demonstrates that there is no simple 'transition' from processes of exchange of property to a sharing economy. Considered ethically, both economic activities are ambivalent and have their pros and cons, so the task is to combine them in a smart way. The 'sharing economy' tries to do just that, but not surprisingly, two ambivalent practices combined can lead to rather different results. With a look at practices of carsharing, the article discusses in what way the property structure involved in a sharing practice has an impact on the desirability of outcomes.

  Description: In this paper, I sketch the formation and transformation of the ‘refugee’ category in legal and historical discourses, as well as the necessity of a new view on migration in all its different groupings. For expressing solidarity in terms of a resonant “Weltbeziehung” (Rosa 2018; 2019), we can say that a 'healthy' Weltbeziehung is one in which the relevant political and legal measures take into account the reality of migration. Where the line between forced and voluntary movement is not always clear. And therefore, the persistence of solidarity beyond euphoric Willkomensmomentum is conditioned by this transformation of Weltbeziehung. Hence, this contribution addresses how the modern refugee regime is still based on unequal sovereignties and egocentric politics. Pleading hereafter, for a solidarity that transcends national interests, and the double standard view on movement.

  Description: The last contribution uses the concepts of Weltbeziehung and “creativity of action” (Hans Joas) to analyse how resonant relationships can be created in the world of science through specific institutions, namely Institutes for Advanced Study (IAS). IAS were established to enhance inter alia independent research, interdisciplinarity, creativity, and innovation. They are characterized by collegiality, tranquility, and inter-relationality. Drawing on the example of the Max-Weber-Kolleg, Hollstein shows that resonant relationships allowing for creative interdisciplinary research can be observed and enabled, but not enforced.
