Description / Abstract

Since 1993 the German-French band Stereo Total from Berlin has been creating eclectic pop songs which perform complex cultural transfers. The present article focuses on the fusion of popular French song-writing with subcultural sounds from Berlin and on the interplay between the linguistic particulars of German and French in the work of the duo. The images and discourses transported in the music, text and self-presentation of Françoise Cactus and Brezel Göring are continually shaped by their personal preferences. This enables the mediation of German and French musical traditions beyond established national clichés.
