Description / Abstract

Zu Straßburg auf der Schanz is one of the few deserter’s songs which have a prominent position in the repertoires of both German »Lied« and the folk song. The adaptation of Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim was set to music by composers as famous as Friedrich Silcher, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler and Wilhelm Kienzl. The »alphorn version« in Des Knaben Wunderhorn refers to the discourse on the psychosomatic disease »Nostalgia«. Following the song’s tradition the »Swiss Disease« appears to gain thematic presence even in the musical settings. In Kienzl’s drama Der Kuhreigen the song is eventually found in a dramatic self-inclusion.
