Description / Abstract

Abstract: "Politics of origin" refers to the construction of a certain principle of action, which obtains its specific legitimation through a narrative of thresholds: a perspective regarding the "new world", "new order" or "new paradigm", which is linked to a certain epochal event and which derives its legitimation through the emphasis of this origin. The following article debates "politics of origin" by reference to the empirical investigation of the construction of a discourse of "Axial Age" within the European history of religions of the 20th century. Reifications of the thesis of "Axial Age", like certain authors have tried to do following its popularization by Karl Jaspers and Alfred Weber, can therefore be understood as actualizations of a new politics. Even though the article conceptualizes the narrative of "Axial Age" as a mytho-poetical construction by the histories of religion, it also tries to develop an analytical tool for the general study of threshold-narratives. This analytical tool links approaches and concepts from the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, narratology as well as systematic science of religion under the term "temporal technologiesof positioning".
