Description / Abstract

Abstract: The author sketches an empirical theory of classroom practice which is located beyond the theoretical appearance of (structural) functionalism. Starting point for the investigation are empirical findings of research on instruction, which are being discussed with regard to their theoretical relevance. The key question here is: what can be observed on the theoretical level once sociology takes note of these empirical findings. To answer this question, three dimensions of school teaching are examined: the oral classroom activity, the materiality of teaching, and the categorization of the students. What these dimensions have in common is that they generate and process knowledge for and knowledge about students.
