Description / Abstract

For patients in need of care the chance to be attended by a family member (from 20 to 65 years) will in only some ten years decrease at about 30 percent. But not only demographic factors make it appear unlikely that the same extent of family care could be kept up to the current level. An analysis of survey data and the information from the official statistics shows that the extent of homecare by relatives is effected by numerous social, cultural, economic, regional, and last but not least, social law issues which are foreshadowing already. Almost all of these factors, however, are currently evolving so that the takeover of care by relatives gets more and more unlikely. Even a massive expansion of professional, flexible and affordable care-facilities and the development of agreements on plant level to combine work and care would hardly compensate the expected decline in home care by relatives. But it might give citizens who have chosen "elderly care" as perspective of living, an opportunity to do so. -- Keywords -- Home Care, future development, requirements for homecare.
