Description / Abstract

-- In this contribution, the Contextual Model of Learning is outlined as a theoretical framework for empirical studies about learning in museums. The model is structured in three contexts: the personal, the sociocultural and the physical context. Each of these is subdivided into several factors that influence learning processes in museums. The article describes rele-vant contexts and factors and gives an overview about research dealing with computer-assisted learning concerning the topic biodiversity. The complex term biodiversity addresses the aspects of genetic, species and ecosystem diversity. The general aim of a study in which a learning environment was created and evaluated, was to offer an interesting and informative access to the topic biodiversity to the students. So far, only few empirical studies address the use of computers in out-of-school learning settings, e.g. natural history museums. Further research concerning the edu-cational integration of the topic biodiversity is still needed. The Contextual Model of Learning provides a structured and complex approach for research on computer-assisted learning in museums, and helps to better understand the underlying learning process. The relevance of this theoretical model for future studies in informal educational institutions - especially in museums - is discussed. --
