Beschreibung / Abstract
Abstract: Since the beginning of the 1990s there has been an ongoing debate on changing patterns of cultural preferences and practices, mainly in English speaking countries. This discussion is centered around the concept of cultural omnivorousness. The empirical phenomenon discussed can be understood as a variation of distinction by combining highbrow as well as lowbrow culture. The debate is equally important for research on social inequality as well as cultural sociology. The article has two goals: Firstly, it offers a review of current international research as well as research from German speaking countries on "cultural omnivorousness". Secondly, the article presents distinct readings of the concept and systematically differentiates dimensions of cultural omnivorousness. This conceptual work lays the ground for a discussion of variations of distinction. Finally, the article presents ideas for further research. Keywords: cultural omnivore, distinction, cultural consumption, social inequality
