Beschreibung / Abstract

Multicultural education has been under discussion lately and there have been multiple attempts to put its concepts into practice not only in modern general education and educational institutions, but also in pre-school education. However, there is very little conceptual differentiation of multicultural education as a task for youth- and adult-education outside the school and other educational institutions, although there is extensive and diverse practice. This article sketches some perspectives for such a conceptualisation, based upon the current discourse about general education. It focusses on the self-concept of professional educators and tries to make a connection with the concept of pedagogical professionalism as such. The underlying assumption that there are cultures of knowledge seems to be particularly fruitful for this topic. The article suggests a new conceptualization of a field of the pedagogic profession, therefore the argument is not an empirical one, but based upon theories of education.
Keywords: multicultural education, self-concept, conceptual framework, youth education, adult education
