Unser Beitrag stellt erste Ergebnisse eines biografisch orientierten Forschungsprojekts vor, in dem drei Generationen von Bildungsaufsteiger(inne)n in Ost- und Westdeutschland unter-sucht wurden. Erläutert wird der Einfluss der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse auf den individuellen Bildungsaufstieg. Dazu haben wir ein theoretisches Instrumentarium entwickelt, das die Konzeption Bourdieus mit dem Konzept der Politischen Gelegenheits-struktur verbindet. In den Blick rücken damit spezifische Dynamiken, die förderlich auf die Bildungswege gewirkt haben. Anhand von Fallbeispielen zeigen wir zwei dieser typischen Förderstrukturen auf.

Our article presents some of the key findings of a study that is based on biographical inter-views to investigate three generations of educational climbers in East and West Germany. Focusing on the influence of political and societal conditions on individual upward mobility through education, we developed a conceptional framework that combines Bourdieu´s theory with the concept of political opportunity structure. It enables us to investigate the dynamics of fostering mobility by creating access to higher education. These dynamics can be described as typical opportunity structures. Two of them we want to explain in this article.
