Zusammenfassung: Ziel des Aufsatzes ist es, einige zentrale Beiträge des amerikanischen Soziologen Andrew Abbott zur Methodologie der Sozialwissenschaften genauer vorzustellen und damit einen neuen Impuls in die Debatte über die Erklärungsproblematik der Soziologie einzubringen. Denn Abbott bietet auf Grundlage seines Theorems fraktaler Heuristiken eine äußerst anregende Interpretation der Entwicklung der Soziologie und der damit verbundenen methodologischen Richtungsstreits an. Des Weiteren macht sich Abbott für einen multiplen Erklärungsbegriff stark, der weder ein einzig gültiges deduktiv-nomologisches Erklärungsschema präjudiziert, noch das interpretative Lager von jeglicher Form von Erklärungsanspruch befreit. Im Anschluss an Abbott plädieren wir abschließend für mehr Gelassenheit im Umgang mit der eigentümlichen Multiperspektivität der Soziologie. Denn aus Sicht der Fraktaltheorie soziologischer Wissensproduktion ist ein gewisser Eklektizismus in der soziologischen Theoriebildung scheinbar ohnehin unvermeidlich, und alle Versuche einer Purifizierung und Vereinheitlichung des soziologischen Blicks sind letztlich zum Scheitern verurteilt.

To Andrew Abbott´s Sociology of Fractal Heuristics
Abstract: In this article we introduce some of Andrew Abbott´s major methodological considerations in order to bring in a new and original perspective to current debates on the problem of explanation in sociology. Based on his concept of "fractal heuristics" we claim that Abbott provides a very inspiring interpretation of knowledge production in sociology and respective methodological debates and battles. Beyond that, Abbott also convincingly pleads for a multiple view of the concept of explanation in sociology that neither predetermines one particular nomological script of explanation, nor does it a priori exclude interpretative approaches in sociology from the goal of providing explanations. Following Abbott´s considerations we finally argue for more composure with regard to the peculiar multi-perspectivity of sociology. From the perspective of Abbott´s fractal logics of knowledge production some degree of eclecticism seems to be inevitable, and all attempts of purifying and standardizing sociological reflection are destined to fail.
