Beschreibung / Abstract

Experimentalism rather than Explanans?
To the Actuality of John Dewey´s Pragmatist Philosophy of Research
Abstract: The theory/practice-disconnect in German social theory has been successfully challenged by the so-called empirical-interpretative turn. But the turn was rarely extended to the question of sociological explanation. Joining John Dewey´s theory of inquiry, the paper gives an account of a "methodological experimentalism". First, some critical notes are given on the reception of pragmatism so far, lacking experimental aspect of inquiry. Furthermore, selected examples of Science and Technology Studies and Actor-Network-Theory point to the operational procedure of doing sociological explanation. According to Dewey, STS and ANT, knowledge means interruption and new orientation in the continuum of sociological experience. A "sociological" Dewey has effects on sociological explanation aiming for theoretical generalization: Theory, instead of being something fixed, gets implemented and modified through mutual testing of analysis and method.
