Beschreibung / Abstract

This contribution focuses on certain features of media pedagogy in the Northern European area that encompasses Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark) and the wider Nordic region (Finland, Iceland, Šland). These are all welfare states with many common values rooted in egalitarianism, participation in political and social life, modest lifestyles, and a strong emphasis on education as a vehicle for social development. The use of media for different purposes in education is analysed according to an analytical division between: a) teaching about media, b) media socialisation and c) teaching with media. Media pedagogy is the Nordic term for this vast area, although there is an ongoing discourse about how to distinguish between literacies, competencies, curricular aims and pedagogical practices. The presentation of the three dimensions is partially given in a narrative form with background information on the historical development of the various tendencies and problems, and critical issues are addressed in order to polarise positions and interpretations. The research community is rather uncritical to tendencies in the field, and takes for granted that media pedagogy is progressive and positive.
