Beschreibung / Abstract
Ethnographic fieldwork poses a specific challenge for researchers as it implies that the reality of the field will be depicted from an internal view. However, the way in which the personal experiences of researchers can connect with the social conditions and spatial arrangements of the field is not only a question concerning the starting point of the fieldwork, but rather an active element within the whole of it. As such, it has to be considered permanently. Drawing from examples of a long-term ethnographic study of the red light district within the Bahnhofsviertel (the quarter surrounding the main train station) of Frankfurt am Main, problems and demands of research done in "deviant fields" are discussed.
Keywords: Ethnography, deviant behavior, empirical social research, social attribution, prostitution, drug scene, police, urban sociology.
